As we continue to refine the Cardinal+ Verification System, our team is constantly looking for ways to strengthen the trust between rescuers and donors. To ensure that our community remains the gold standard for transparency and scam prevention on Reddit, we are announcing an important update regarding how funds are collected for verified fundraisers.

The Change: Restricted Payment Platforms

Effective immediately, r/AnimalRescue via Cardinal+ will no longer support the use of direct peer-to-peer payment apps for individual fundraisers. This includes:

Moving forward, all verified fundraisers must utilize platforms that feature a public-facing donation tracker (such as GoFundMe or Spotfund) or provide a way for donors to pay a veterinary clinic’s business account directly.

Why are we making this change?

We know that apps like Venmo and CashApp are fast and easy to use. However, the Cardinal+ system is built on the principle of trust, and after reviewing our community safety data, the administration team identified four key reasons for this transition:

  1. Public Accountability: Unlike professional fundraising sites, peer-to-peer apps do not have a public ledger. Donors cannot see how much has been raised in real-time. This makes it impossible for the community to know when a goal has been reached, leading to potential over-funding without clarity.
  2. Audit Barriers: To protect the integrity of our "Verified" flairs, mods must be able to verify that funds are used exactly as promised. Private transaction histories are difficult to audit without compromising your personal privacy. Public pages provide a clear, timestamped record for everyone to see.
  3. Donor Protection: Most personal transfers on these apps do not offer protection. If a fundraiser is found to be fraudulent, donors have no way to recover their funds. By requiring professional platforms, we ensure donors are covered by the platform’s own safety guarantees.
  4. Professional Standards: For serious rescuers and 501(c)(3) organizations, using designated platforms helps keep rescue funds separate from personal money. This ensures legal compliance and prevents the "commingling" of funds that can lead to confusion during verification and audits.
